Krishna is the most important of the ten incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu. Here he is shown with his characteristic flute, a symbol of his time spent as a cowherd. When he played his flute the animals around would stand still and worship him, and the music would entice gopis (cowgirls) to come and dance with him. As a youth, the cowherd Krishna became famous as a lover, the tone of his flute provoking the gopis (wives and daughters of the cowherds) to leave their homes to dance ecstatically with him in the moonlight. This Krishna Statue is the god of a pastoral community. The Krishna who emerged from the blending of these figures was ultimately identified with the supreme god Vishnu-Narayana and, hence, considered his avatar. The Lord Krishna was adored for his mischievous pranks, he also performed many wonders and slew demons. The child Krishna was loved for his playful pranks; he also showed many miracles and slew demons.
